I know we all hear about how important taking family portraits is.... but I know it isn't the easiest thing to pull off! Getting everyone together and organized seems more like a chore quiet often than a blessing. This summer my parents got all of us together in a beach house for a week and so we had to do a family picture! My wonderful friend and assistant Kim actually took some shots of my family and I had the priviledge of updating her fun little clan too. I'm completely happy we took the time to do this though. The last time I have a 4 generation photo with us - Madison was 3 months old. 13 years flies by faster than you can imagine.
I have just started to go thru them and edit. A little bit harder when it is your own family! I just grabbed two images quickly to share.
So my own family is crazy, unpredictable, loving, aggravating (when living all together under 1 roof!), accepting and spontaneous.... and I wouldn't trade them on most days. Now wave a super cute pair of Christian Louboutin in front of me and a margarita and I might trade a couple of them on the spot, but hey that isn't a fair fight anyway! So in the end while I wish, like 90% of women, that I had lost weight before doing a family photo and I'm sure someone wont like their hair or whatever... I'm really happy to have this moment. Families age, change and grow and it is the continuous evolution that keeps things so interesting. My Grandfather is 90 and I know that each year to come is a gift with my Grandparents. My little niece is 2 and growing fast and each moment is a fleeting gift that kind of whizzes by. We wont touch the fact that I could possibly have a 13 year old daughter... let's just leave that one alone!
In the end no matter how frustrating organizing this little shoot was (I now have more sympathy for my Mom's organizing family sessions!) it was worth every minute. So while fashion and trends may come and go I will always have a portrait of my crazy family and a reminder of the nutty week that showed every facet of what makes our family ... well a family.
